LOCATION:

North Highland Nordic is located on the northern tip of Nova Scotia’s world famous Cabot Trail, in the village of Cape North. Here, in the mountains that make up the northern reaches of the Appalachian chain, prevailing winds bring almost daily highland flurries, and annual snowfall accumulation frequently exceeds ten feet (three metres).

FACILITY:

North Highland Nordic’s facility comprises its 17 kilometer (ten mile) trail network an indoor facility housing a warming/waxing area, indoor washrooms and a small food area serving hot snacks.

GROOMING:

North Highland Nordic employs a Pisten Bulley PB 70 tractor, with a snow tiller and double track setters, which allows the operator to completely renovate frozen tracks to turn them into fresh powder in one step.

SNOW CONDITIONS:

Snowfall in this region usually begins in mid-November, and daily grooming operations are generally underway in mid-December, continuing into mid-April. The daily use of tiller-equipped grooming tractors results in trail conditions that meet international standards of excellence.

RENTALS:

North Highland Nordic offers a full rental fleet of equipment, including waxless, waxable and skating skis, boots and poles for use on its trail system.

RATES:

North Highland Nordic has made a commitment to inexpensive season and daily membership rates. 2003 rates are as follows:

North Highland Nordic offers group discounts on daily memberships and rentals for groups of ten persons or more.

PROGRAMS:

On-going programs include:

• Jackrabbit Ski League: a learn-to-ski program for children aged 3 – 12 years;
• Teenage Learn-To-Ski;
• High school racing program;
• Adult Learn-To-Ski Program.
  

SPECIAL EVENTS:

North Highland Nordic annually hosts a number of special events designed to appeal to skiers of varying interests and abilities. Examples include:

• The North Highland Loppet, normally held every March;
• The North Highland Nordic Open house, held the first week in January;
• The North Highland Nordic SKIGO, a combination of Ski Touring and Bingo.

Additionally, the area also hosts provincial and regional racing events that vary from year to year, such as the Atlantic Championships and the Nova Scotia Championships.
